Painting 1

Is the painting authentic? Where does it come from? Who is the author? What restorations did it undergo over its existence? These are some of many questions asked with regard to art. The X-ray imaging gives answers to many of these questions. Even though it might seem to be easy to take an X-ray image of a painting the contrary is true. Paintings contain very diverse range of materials starting from very light organic materials to pigments containing heavy metals. These materials are moreover in layers overlapping each other. Visualisation of all these is a challenging task where photon counting detectors excel.
